The Castle Stables and Courtyard at Rathfarnham is an SDCC and THRIVE-funded regeneration project that will breathe new life into a unique collection of historic stable yards, outbuildings and Cromwell’s Fort, adjoining Rathfarnham Castle. The project will transform these heritage structures into a vibrant destination comprising of a multi-purpose event space, arts and cultural uses, retail units, and a new café, securing a sustainable future for these important heritage assets while preserving their historic character.

The guided tour will outline the evolution of the project from its initial concept and master-planning through to the approved design proposals. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the historic courtyard setting, learn about the heritage significance of the buildings, and view the plans for their transformation ahead of the commencement of construction works.

The project was developed following public consultation and has been guided by Town Centre First and New European Bauhaus principles. A multidisciplinary design team led by a Grade 1 conservation architect, developed the proposals to Part 8 Planning Application stage, which was approved by Council in July 2025. Construction works are expected to commence in Q4 2026.

This THRIVE – Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme project is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund Southern, Eastern and Midland Regional Programme 2021-2027.
