Tour Information +
The General Post Office (GPO) on O’Connell Street, Dublin, is one of Ireland’s most important historic buildings. Opened in 1818, it is a landmark of Georgian architecture and a symbol of national heritage. The GPO is best known as the headquarters of the 1916 Easter Rising, where leaders of the rebellion proclaimed the Irish Republic.
This very special and in-depth tour will show the scale of the GPO offices on five floors surrounding two inner courtyards, including the Art Deco entrance of the former An Post HQ; various office areas formerly occupied by An Post: the Dome area which housed the Telegram Office: the balcony giving a bird’s-eye view of the Public Letter Office hall with its ornate features and original 1929 writing desks, counters and light fittings, the CuChulainn statue and the ornate stairwell used by Radio Eireann before their move to Donnybrook. The tour will conclude in the GPO Museum courtyard. Attendees can then avail of free admission to the GPO Museum, courtesy of An Post.
Meeting Point: GPO entrance on Henry Street (between Hickeys Pharmacy & Fields Jewellers)
Pre-Book Only
Accessibility Information
The GPO is a mostly vacant building and there are a lot of stairs involved in this tour but most of it is accessible by lift. Should a wheelchair user wish to attend, we will be able to bring them on an alternative more wheelchair friendly route – with advance notice.
