The tour will uncover one of the most singular and original building in Trinity College and perhaps in the whole city. Built in 1853–87, the Museum Building broke with the dominant trend of classicism and brought to Dublin a lively and eclectic approach to Gothic architecture. We will admire the intricate carvings within and outside the building as an expression of Victorian ideals linked to individualism, Romanticism, and artistic freedom. We will marvel at the use of native Irish stone as a reflection of national pride. And we will explore how the interior was designed to be a new type of university building that was both beautiful and functional – and how it still performs that role today.

Meeting Point: In front of the entrance to the Museum Building, Trinity College Dublin, Park Lane East, D02 PN40
