Back on the Open House programme but this time as a completed project. Chartered Quantity Surveyor Nick Taaffe transformed a vacant Barbershop into a 3-storey house on the main street of Dun Laoghaire.

While seen as one project it can be divided into two distinct phases, the restoration of an existing 150-year-old building and the construction of three storey new build element within the constraints of an infill site.

A challenging and complex project from the outset. It included some of the most difficult aspects in converting vacant commercial buildings. Innovative solutions were found to maximise the building form and shape of the site while simultaneously navigating through an unprecedented rise in construction costs.

Purchased during the pandemic the project has been a journey and a passion. The project success and the ability for the owner to counter construction cost increases was due to the support extended by the Croi Conaithe Vacant Home Grant and the team at Dun Laoghaire County Council who assisted in its administration.

Nick now represents the Society of Chartered Surveyors as the Chairperson for research on Vacant and Derelict buildings. As such the tour will focus on the project itself but also touch on the general aspects of vacancy and dereliction.
