Led by a staff member for Kilmainham Gaol Museum, this walking tour will visit the sites of former 18th and 19th century prisons in the north inner city. These include the area where ‘New’ Newgate Prison once stood, the Sheriff of Dublin’s debtors’ prison and the former home of Grangegorman Female Penitentiary, the first ever women’s prison in Great Britain or Ireland. Please note there is also a separate tour looking at former prisons south of the Liffey.

Meeting Point: The courthouse entrance on Halston Street (D07 W568). There are two entrances to the Courthouse, but the tour will start on Halston Street.

Please note: There are two separate Lost Prisons of Dublin walking tours:

  • South: Saturday 18th October at 10:00AM –  Intersection of Marrowbone Lane and Pimlico, Dublin 8
  • North: Saturday 18th October at 1:00PM – Courthouse, Halston Street, Dublin 7.

The tours follow different routes and have different meeting points, so please make sure you select the correct tour when booking.

Most of the tour will go along the city streets. There may be one or two areas with no wheelchair access, but the vast majority of the route should be accessible. some of the ground will be uneven.

Car Park: The nearest carparks are probably on Loftus Lane or Smithfield.
