Tour Information +
This architecture and history walking tour will start at Chancery Park beside the Four Courts Luas stop. We will walk in the footsteps of the King killers of Pill Lane, who were being watched by the Sham Squire. We will visit the spot where John Clinch and the Sheares brothers were hanged in 1798. We will hear how Lord Edward Fitzgerald cried out in his last great agony as the Yeomen fired on John Clinch’s sympathisers. We will be reminded how a few years later Robert Emmet was hanged and beheaded shortly after he had delivered one of the finest trial speeches in history. We will hear the story of Joe Brady and James ‘Skin the Goat’ Fitzharris the Invincibles. Will visit the sites of two twentieth century tragedies. The Tenement house collapse in Church Street 1913 and the North King Street massacre 1916. The tour will end in Saint Michan’s Churchyard the final resting place of Oliver Bond the leader of the king killers of pill lane.
Along the way, we will explore architectural history of the area. Our journey takes us past the monumental Neoclassical dome of the Four Courts, through the shifting streetscapes of Georgian grandeur and industrial brickwork, and past the tragic sites of Dublin’s old tenement houses to the ancient stone structures and famous subterranean vaults of Saint Michan’s.
The meeting point for this walking tour is the Four Courts Luas stop. Places are allocated on a first come basis and are limited to 20 per tour. You may be asked to join the later tour if numbers are too high.
