Step inside one of Dublin’s most iconic landmarks and discover a side of Killiney Hill that is rarely seen by the public. Built in 1742, the distinctive stone obelisk has stood watch over the surrounding landscape for almost three centuries and remains one of the area’s most recognisable features.
Behind its striking conical form lies a surprisingly intricate structure. The monument was designed with recessed stone arches, internal seating areas, and a staircase leading through the heart of the building. Its weathered inscription still tells the story of its origin, recording how local landowner John Mapas commissioned the obelisk and surrounding walks during the severe winter of 1741-42, providing much-needed employment for local people during a time of hardship.
For generations, visitors have been drawn to the hill, with the obelisk serving as both a landmark and a focal point in the landscape. From eighteenth-century sightseers to modern-day walkers, countless people have admired the monument from the outside, but few have had the opportunity to explore within its stone walls.
This special opening offers a rare chance to uncover the history, architecture and stories behind one of South Dublin’s most beloved monuments.
