Fairview Park: What Next?

Fairview Park is one of Dublin’s most significant yet under-realised public spaces. Located at the meeting point of the River Tolka and Dublin Bay, it sits within a wider network of green and blue infrastructure that has shaped the city’s development over time.

Originally formed on reclaimed shoreline in the early 20th century, the park is now approaching its centenary. While it has long supported a wide range of sporting and recreational uses, its relationship to the surrounding landscape has become fragmented. Rail and road infrastructure separate the main park from the waterfront, while growing communities nearby are placing increasing demands on public space. As cities evolve, parks such as Fairview take on an expanded role — not simply as open space, but as places where people reconnect with landscape, water and each other.

This event presents a community-led vision for the future of Fairview Park, developed by Brennan Furlong Architects in collaboration with the Dublin City Sports Club Network, representing over 50 local clubs and schools. Through drawings, models and illustrated material, it explores how the park might evolve to meet contemporary needs.

The proposal looks beyond individual pitches or facilities, considering how Fairview Park could function as a connected civic landscape. It identifies opportunities to improve access to the water’s edge, strengthen links to public transport, and create clearer pedestrian and cycle routes across and through the park. At the same time, it supports the upgrading of existing sports infrastructure to enable more inclusive, year-round use.

As Dublin continues to grow and adapt, the project asks a simple question: what should Fairview Park become in the next 100 years?
