Throughout the life of the Royal Hospital as a nursing and retirement home for predominantly Irish veterans of the British Armed Forces, the building would be constructed, edited and expanded under the watchful eyes of several architects. These men brought their own style and convictions but also connected through the building, the Royal Hospital with many of the landmarks of Dublin today.

This tour will take you through the building of the Royal Hospital and its development focusing on several of the architects, their influence and lives.

Meeting point: Tour begins in the central courtyard of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham beside the “Old Man’s House” exhibition. Please arrive 5 minutes before the tour begins.

This tour is pre-book only.


Accessibility Information
The site is mostly wheelchair accessible. However, part of the tour will be in the formal gardens of the grounds which are not wheelchair accessible. The ground is mostly even and cement underfoot but in the central courtyard there are areas of cobblestones which some may have not accessible and one part is on grass
