Completed in 1882 and originally known as 17 Charleville Terrace, this multi-unit, Airbnb listed building has undergone a process of adaption, extension, and conservation to return it into a trigenerational, single family occupancy home.
Sitting as one of ten, the terraced dwelling had suffered considerable fire and water damage along with significant alterations – rooms inserted, ceilings lowered, subdivision, partial removal of landings and stairs.
Peeling back later interventions allowed connections in space and light to be formed between the main living areas at upper entrance and lower ground floor levels while also preserving the original spatial qualities and architectural details of the original rooms. This has been facilitated through the creation of voids and volumes formed primarily by the removal of introduced fabric.
Inserted joinery elements have been formed in oak with the simplest of detailing allowing the refurbished original details to retain focus. Shuttered window openings to the busy public road and its tree lined canopy to the front of the dwelling are countered with larger unadorned openings to the rear affording views over the rear terrace and the roof and treetops beyond of the neighbouring houses on Charleville Road.
Meeting Point: Footpath in front of the dwelling
