Step inside one of Dublin’s most iconic landmarks and discover a side of Killiney Hill that is rarely seen by the public. Built in 1742, the distinctive stone obelisk has stood watch over the surrounding landscape for almost three centuries and remains one of the area’s most recognisable features.

Behind its striking conical form lies a surprisingly intricate structure. The monument was designed with recessed stone arches, internal seating areas, and a staircase leading through the heart of the building. Its weathered inscription still tells the story of its origin, recording how local landowner John Mapas commissioned the obelisk and surrounding walks during the severe winter of 1741-42, providing much-needed employment for local people during a time of hardship.

For generations, visitors have been drawn to the hill, with the obelisk serving as both a landmark and a focal point in the landscape. No wheelchair or buggy access as there are many steps which are very narrow. No dogs allowed. Not suitable for people who are afraid of heights. Overall, in order to access this building, you will need to walk up a hill.
