A Russian canon, a Victorian bandstand, a shadow clock, and a memorial plaque dedicated to an Irish literary giant are just some of the fascinating features to be discovered on Dún Laoghaire’s iconic East Pier. The lighthouse is surrounded by a defensive battery that has only once been engaged for the firing of an official gun salute rather than battle. The battery also used to house Dún Laoghaire’s famous foghorn until it was decommissioned in 2011, a sound familiar to generations who grew up on the south coast of Dublin. This tour will visit the old fog bell and examine many other fascinating aspects of Dún Laoghaire’s defining pier.

Meeting point: Russian Cannon, end of East Pier.
