This is a historic walking tour of Smithfield and its environs led by historian Fergus Whelan author of Dissent into Treason. We will learn about ‘the king-killers of Pill Lane'(present day Chancery Street) and their role in the 1798 rebellion. We will hear of the nefarious deeds of the Sham Squire the informer who was responsible for the capture of Lord Edward Fizgerald. We will visit the site of Newgate prison where Lord Edward died from his wounds and from where Edward’s friend Archibald Hamilton Rowan made a daring escape in 1794. We will visit Green Street Court House where Rober Emmet made his famous speech from the dock in 1803. The tour will end at Saint Michan’s, the final resting place of the Shears brothers and Oliver Bond who were the leaders of the Pill Lane United Irishmen.

This is an outdoor tour, mostly on pavement and pathways (in Michans churchyard ) road crossing at pedestrian crossings.
