Tour Information +
Oliver St John Gogarty, an aspiring poet and the inspiration for Buck Mulligan, rented this
demilitarised Martello Tower in 1904 and invited James Joyce to join him. Joyce stayed less than a week but would go on to immortalise the Tower by setting the first episode of his masterpiece Ulysses here. After constructing his modernist seaside villa Geragh next door, the Architect Michael Scott purchased the Tower in 1954 as the location of the first James Joyce museum. In 1978 his firm Scott, Tallon and Walker designed the current museum exhibition hall. This tour, focusing on the architectural history of the James Joyce Tower and Museum, will be led by its Curator, Dr Alice Ryan.
