City Architects – North Inner City Housing Walking Tour
Dominick Street Lower, Rotunda, Dublin 1
This walking tour will explore recently completed, proposed and under-construction social housing + community projects in the north inner city. The tour will begin on Dominick Street where the recently completed Dominick Hall contrasts against the 1960’s block of flats on the opposite street. These flats are set for redevelopment with a strong emphasis on adoptive re-use and community engagement. It signals the Council’s desire to demonstrate how its existing housing stock can be successfully modernised and transformed while reducing embodied carbon during construction and when in use.
The tour will then move onto the recently completed Sean Foster Place which was designed with energy efficiency as a key driver. The low amount of energy used by residents is provided from renewable sources while a ‘Fabric First Approach’ to the design of the external leaf achieves a high level of thermal comfort and efficiency. All 30 apartments are either dual or triple aspect.
The tour will continue to Constitution Hill flats which are to be redeveloped to again demonstrate how Dublin’s existing housing stock can be transformed while also sensitively incorporating new buildings into the existing site. 124 new homes are proposed here along with a resident garden & play spaces with improved connections to Constitution Hill and Broadstone Plaza.
The tour will finish at Dorset Street where the on-going redevelopment will provide for 163 new homes along with new spaces for community use. This will provide 50 additional new higher quality homes with high environmental sustainability. The improved site planning and landscaping will provide better access and a higher standard of amenity to residents. The historic Dorset Street Fire Station building is to remain and is celebrated as a focal point in the complex.
