IMPORTANT – Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond their control An Taisce have had to cancel this event for Open House Dublin.

Dublin’s oldest surviving guildhall, built to accommodate the Guild of Tailors in Dublin, is home to An Taisce, the National Trust for Ireland, since 1984. The two-storey building over basement is clad in red brick with a steep pitched roof. The entrance hall is brightly lit by tall round-headed windows and the interior includes a particularly fine staircase and several 18th century marble chimneypieces. Restored from dereliction in the 1960s, with further work in the 1980s.

The Hall is still in use to this day as a community event space, hosting weddings, lectures, AGMs, art exhibitions, meetings and all types of musical and cultural events.

The tour will take in the lower floors of the Hall including the Great Hall and Wolfe Tone Room, incorporating the history of the building, from its construction from 1703-1706, its use firstly as a Master Tailors’ Guild Hall and then through various uses, including entertainment, guilds, teaching, political meetings, an army barracks, and a courthouse. It was also the scene of the Back Lane Parliament of 1792. It has been a central part of Dublin history for the past 300 years.
