Reimagining Elderhood explores the future housing needs of people in mid-life in Ireland, and the role of community-led initiative and architecture in providing innovative responses to this opportunity and challenge.
The exhibition describes the work and process of three architects – Studio Idir (Belfast), Islander Architects (Dublin) and Ailbhe Cunningham (Cork) – who engaged with their local communities in Ballyhackamore, Balbriggan and Coal Quay to examine the experience of ageing in place in Irish neighbourhoods. Through the project they co-developed interventions in both the public and private realms to improve this experience and enhance resident agency in neighbourhood development.
The exhibition also features a documentary film by Shane Serrano which captures the thoughts and experiences of these three communities, while also visiting exemplar built projects in Naas and London.
The exhibition and reflections explore how architects might be ‘agents of change’ and facilitators of new approaches and thinking about how we live in Ireland.
