Graphic Studio Dublin is housed in a re-purposed granary building (originally part of the old Mountjoy Brewery), off the North Circular Road, close to Croke Park and the Royal canal. The building is a four-storey brick Victorian building, with original cast-iron columns, pitch pine beams and king-post trusses supporting the roof.

The printmaking studio, established in 1960, is home to 90 printmaker artists, working across etching, screen, lino, wood, lithography, with work and exhibition areas, traditional printing presses, copper-cutting guillotines and more. The structure and character of the original building present an ideal re-use as an artists’ studio.

In 1852, Alex Findlater established Findlater’s Mountjoy Brewery which eventually occupied seven acres between Russell St and Portland St, along the Canal bank and extended to the North Circular Road, with water sourced from the Vartry river and deep wells. The outer buildings were of stone, but the Studio is a typical early-19thc industrial brick warehouse with loading bays on each floor. An extension has load-bearing brick walls on the NCR side but cast iron columns on the other. The latter have been in-filled with brickwork but were originally free-standing and probably fitted with timber ventilation louvres and the building used as the hop-drying store for the Brewery.

An exhibition of prints, ‘Echoes of Home’ will be on display in the Print Room. This show of over 50 fine-art prints on the theme of ‘home’ is the fourth partnership with Artists from Graphic Studio Dublin and Simon Communities of Ireland, supported by HLB Ireland. All sales are split 50:50 between artists and Simon Communities, supporting solutions to homelessness.

Tours of the building, noting original architectural features and demonstrating its current use, with printing demonstrations by members will be available on the day.
