Esker Cemetery is sited in a subtle valley with a defined boundary to the historic Esker Cemetery dating from 1890 and a small housing estate to the east. To the north and west there is a more continuous landscape defined by the watercourse, which joins the Griffin river as it descends to Lucan village’s historic centre.

The Cemetery Gate House is positioned at the top of this tributary valley where the reinstated watercourse intersects with the boundary road that passes the historic gate lodge to Canonbrook House and the entry gates to the neighbouring cemeteries. The design of Esker Gate House evolved from this entry gate/ gate lodge typology. The building and boundary wall were conceived as a continuous edge element which folds inwards to create an entry court that gathers and then splits the flow of people arriving. Pedestrian flows are brought further into congruence with this fluvial organisational strategy as arrivals from the carpark follow the gentle gradient articulated by the colonnaded periphery of the building to re-join the processional group in the columbarium plaza. The solid granite columbarium walls which enclose this confluence space, frame long landscape views
along the curving retaining walls which extend from the building and plaza geometry.
