A low-carbon renovation and two-storey extension to an early twentieth-century semi-detached cottage in Deansgrange, built entirely by the

client. The project is the result of an enthusiastic and hands-on client, with a shared care and consideration for building physics and ecological materials. The deep energy retrofit of the existing house with a new all-timber extension, improves the comfort and energy performance while retaining the charm of the original cottage. Sensitivity to moisture and permeability within the historic fabric led to the use of natural, breathable materials

throughout. The new extension is expressed externally through a contrasting palette of natural materials. To the rear, a façade of part-salvaged, part-new timber cladding extends the house towards its mature garden views.

Salvaged and repurposed materials collected by the owners over many years were integrated throughout the family home, reducing upfront carbon, construction waste and costs. The result is a modest and resourceful intervention that achieves maximum impact with a limited budget.
