A renovation and compact extension to an 1950’s Dublin Corporation terraced house in Drimnagh, designed for a young couple and their four pets.
The project seeks to enlarge the main living spaces of the small floor plan without compromising the natural light reaching deep into existing house. A part-timber, part-masonry structure allows the extension to respond to these requirements – the exposed timber frame creates a warm, heightened interior above the dining room and accommodates a high-level window opening to the sky, drawing daylight deep into the plan. Steel is used sparingly, primarily to support the first-floor of the rear façade.
Externally, the extension is wrapped in continuous bands of smooth and coarse render, grounded by a cast in-situ concrete base. The tactile skin draws on the character of the original, allowing the extension to feel both distinct and rooted in its context.
Meeting Point: Front Entrance, 94 Cooley Rd, Drimnagh, Dublin 12, D12 DT26. Look out for Open House Dublin Volunteers who will manage queues and entry for the tours.
