Loughlinstown House is one of the oldest and largest surviving Georgian houses in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown and is of considerable architectural interest. Today, it is home to Eurofound – the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions, the only EU agency based in Ireland. This is particularly significant in 2026, as Ireland holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
For more than half a century, Eurofound has carried out research that helps improve living and working conditions, inform policy and support social dialogue across the European Union.
The tour offers visitors a chance to explore both the historic Georgian house and Eurofound’s purpose-built conference centre, which was considered state-of-the-art when it opened in 1992. Eurofound staff will also introduce the agency’s work and its role in shaping better working and living conditions across Europe.
The site’s history stretches back to the 13th century, when a medieval castle stood here. In 1660, Sir William Domville was granted the estate and later built a new house. The present two-storey Georgian house features a seven-bay façade, Venetian window and distinctive rusticated doorway, while the former estate included gardens, woodland and two lakes.
The Domville family remained at Loughlinstown until 1963. Following several changes of ownership, the OPW acquired the house and parkland, and in 1976 Loughlinstown became the home of Eurofound. As the agency expanded, a new 2,300-square-metre building was constructed and officially opened by President Mary Robinson in September 1992.
Today, Loughlinstown House brings together centuries of Irish history and contemporary European cooperation, offering a unique glimpse into both.
