Frances Johnson with refurbishment by FKP Architects

The Richmond Lunatic Asylum opened to patients in 1814/15 in the building we know today as the Lower House & became the largest psychiatric hospital in Ireland. Francis Johnston designed it with the southern range being retained and incorporated into the new campus. The current building is 4,400ms and re-opened as a University building in 2021. Unoccupied since the late 80s, TU Dublin and the Grangegorman Development agency began an ambitious project to restore the building and bring into use on the new University campus. When the refurbishment project commenced in 2018 very little of the internal walls remained. Most of the floors and internal bedroom walls had collapsed and it was in a state of dereliction but a protected structure. The building tour will encompass a walk from the entrance space through the refurbished rooms into the dining areas, new student common rooms, dance studio and gym spaces. We will also view some of the 18 music practice rooms and the student common areas and offices.

Meet at the Front Entrance Doors of Lower House.
