Tour Information +
This walking tour will explore The Clontarf to City Centre Active Travel Project which is part of the Dublin City Council Active Travel Network, and is funded by the National Transport Authority. The scheme extends from Clontarf Road at the junction with Alfie Byrne Road, to Amiens Street at the junction with Talbot Street.
The project provides 8km of high quality walking facilities, 6km of cycling facilities and 5.4km of bus priority infrastructure. Streetscapes have been designed to encourage modal shift to active travel and public transport with the objective of reducing carbon emissions, noise and improving air quality in line with climate action targets. The project also provides public realm improvements, greening, and sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) to create climate resilient streetscapes for the future.
A key objective of the project is to provide inclusive, safe and attractive infrastructure for people walking, wheeling and cycling the route, whilst improving journey times and reliability for bus users. The public realm design is guided by the principles of Universal Design, to create an accessible and inclusive street environment for everyone, and to facilitate social interaction for people of all ages and abilities.
Fundamental to the project is a people‐centred approach to design, exemplified by the creation of several new public spaces to accommodate and encourage vibrant urban street life. Materials used have been selected for their quality, durability and reduced environmental cost, whilst also maintaining and protecting existing historic fabric. 70 new trees have been added along the route also to promote bio‐diversity and provide habitat for native flora and fauna.
