Welcome to Mytilene – 53 Ailesbury Road, the Official Residence of the French Ambassador to Ireland
Nestled in one of Dublin’s most prestigious neighbourhoods, Mytilene was built in 1885 and has been the official residence of the French Ambassador since 1930. Designed by the renowned architect Alfred Gresham Jones, the house was acquired by France to accommodate Charles Alphand, the first French envoy to the Irish Free State. Recently refurbished, the residence opens its doors for a unique behind-the-scenes tour of French diplomacy—offering a rare glimpse into one of Dublin’s grandest homes.
During this 30-minute guided tour, visitors will explore the architectural elegance of the Residence of France and discover its rich history, diplomatic customs, and the many distinguished guests and events it has hosted over the decades.
The tour begins outdoors, with a historical introduction and a closer look at the residence’s asymmetrical façade. Visitors will be invited to admire the building’s distinctive white stonework—setting it apart from its neighbours—and appreciate the imposing scale of this exceptional property.
Inside, the tour continues in the beautifully refreshed reception room, where guests will learn about the space’s architectural features and its role as a setting for key diplomatic and cultural gatherings. From Éamon de Valera and General de Gaulle to François Hollande, the residence has welcomed figures who have shaped the shared history of France and Ireland.
To conclude the visit, the residence’s intendant will introduce some of the formal traditions of “service à la française”, the refined art of French hospitality still practiced during official receptions.
Throughout the visit, guests will also enjoy views of the residence’s expansive garden, visible from over 60 windows.
