The junction of Vernon Avenue and the Clontarf Road is the historic core of the Clontarf fishing village. Here in the 18th century fishermen brought their catch ashore, prepared it for market, repaired their nets and stored their boats.
The open space to the front of what is now Connolly’s pub (“The Sheds”) was where travellers returned, swapped and rented horses used for transporting people and goods to and from the nearby city.
This junction today marks the intersection of two significant projects planned for the area, and the wider city – the Vernon Avenue to Clontarf Road Active Travel Scheme, and the Clontarf Promenade works.
The projects have the capacity to fundamentally change, and potentially improve the public realm for residents, businesses and visitors alike – not just within Clontarf, but for the wider city.
This event will involve an invited panel to explore the history behind the development of the area, discuss the potential for the interface of the projects, and examine the possibilities the projects represent, in a local, but also wider, international context.
Location: Brennan Furlong Architects, 195 Clontarf Road, Dublin 3, D03V124.
