Stoneybatter has changed dramatically over the years. Originally the Viking settlement of Ostmantown, it increased in population in the late nineteenth century when the Dublin Artisans’ Dwelling Company constructed hundreds of one- and two-storey red-brick homes on fields off Stoneybatter.

Since the 1950s, Dublin City Council has built a variety of local authority homes in the area, some of which have recently been renovated to the Passive House standard. In addition, several high-density student housing schemes have been constructed in recent years. Currently, the Montpelier development is under construction, replacing O’Devaney Gardens with mixed-tenure housing.

More recently, the public realm has been upgraded, and the Greening Stoneybatter initiative has introduced trees and green planting throughout the area. Despite these many changes, horses are still housed in back-lane stables, and residents continue to stop for chats on street corners.Stoneybatter has changed dramatically over the years.
