The Magazine Fort was was built to the design of John Corneille and from its construction c.1736 in continuous management and use by the British until 1922 and Irish Military Authorities until 1988 when its ownership and care transferred to the Commissioners of Public Works. It is significant from a historical, archaeological, architectural, industrial, engineering and military perspective. The Magazine Fort played a major role in the events of 1916 as it was raided at the start of the Easter Rising as the signal for the rebellion to commence. There was also the Christmas Raid on 23rd of December 1939 by the IRA against the Irish Army as it was Ireland’s largest munitions dump.
The tour will be delivered by OPW guides service. The tour will give an overview of stabilisation and conservation works to date and the restoration of the original Duke of Dorset gate.
Meeting point: The meeting point is at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre, Dublin 8. Eircode: D08 Y304. Do not meet at the Magazine Fort. A mini bus will be provided to get to Magazine Fort.
