Rachel Carmody Architects recently completed the refurbishment and extension of 48 Greenville Terrace, Dublin 8, transforming a derelict one-bedroom property into a vibrant three-bedroom family home in the heart of the city.
Constructed in the late 1800s, this modest terrace has witnessed Dublin’s evolving streetscape for over a century. A small single-storey extension was added to the rear in the 1970s, but in recent years the house had fallen into disrepair. The project breathes new life into the structure, bridging past and future through design and contributing to Dublin’s future heritage.
As many couples leave the city in search of larger homes and gardens—a trend that has shaped Dublin since the early 20th century—the project demonstrates that cities thrive on diversity, not only in architecture but in age, life stage, and community. Families bring vital energy to urban life, anchoring the city’s future with presence, play, and daily rhythms.
At Greenville Terrace, the design challenges the notion that family living is only possible in the suburbs. Through careful planning and thoughtful use of space, the compact home accommodates the needs of a growing family. While the private outdoor space is modest, the home’s central location provides immediate access to Dublin’s parks, cultural amenities, and playgrounds, effectively turning the city itself into an extended backyard.
Meeting point for tours is outside 48 Greenville Terrace (D08 R2T9). Look out for Open House Dublin Volunteers who will manage queues and entry for the tours.
