Farmleigh House is an interesting example of built heritage. Initially constructed as a modest private residence in the mid-18th century, it changed hands many times before becoming the rustic retreat of the distinguished Guinness family.Edward Cecil Guinness (great grandson of the legendary Arthur Guinness) purchased a significantly smaller Farmleigh House in 1873. The house and estate remained in the Guinness family until 1999 and over this period was subject to significant modification. This tour sets out to trace the evolution of a modest residential property into Ireland’s State Guesthouse.

The tour will begin by contemplating Farmleigh House’s neo classical façade and other design options which were considered and rejected. After that we will examine how the property was modified during the Guinness era and doubled in size . Then we will move inside to consider the myriad of stylistic influences that coalesce to create its exceptionally charming and eclectic interior before finally commenting on the conversions necessary to make the property fit for its new role in facilitating Guests of the Nation.
