The General Post Office (GPO) on O’Connell Street, Dublin, is one of Ireland’s most important historic buildings. Opened in 1818, it is a landmark of Georgian architecture and a symbol of national heritage. The GPO is best known as the headquarters of the 1916 Easter Rising, where leaders of the rebellion proclaimed the Irish Republic.

This very special and in-depth tour will show the scale of the GPO offices on five floors surrounding two inner courtyards, including the Art Deco entrance of the former An Post HQ; the basement vaults and secret stairs; various office areas formerly occupied by An Post: the Dome area which housed the Telegram Office: the balcony giving a bird’s-eye view of the Public Letter Office hall with its ornate features and original 1929 writing desks, counters and light fittings, the CuChulainn statue and the ornate stairwell used by Radio Eireann before their move to Donnybrook. The tour will conclude in the GPO Museum courtyard. Attendees can then avail of free admission to the GPO Museum, courtesy of An Post.

The tour will be hosted for Open House Dublin by Caitlin White who is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Education, Trinity College Dublin, and a historian whose work focuses on public history, civic education, and futures thinking. She currently works on the Critical ChangeLab project on youth and democracy.
