A Single Pear Tree Sits at the Heart of these Lands
Pear Tree Crossing, The Liberties
The Liberties plays a unique part in Dublin’s character and is located in an area with a strong sense of community and identity. The lands known as Pear Tree Crossing at The Digital Hub present the Land Development Agency (LDA) with an exceptional opportunity to contribute to the social and economic story of The Liberties and create something that will be valued by future generations. Working in partnership with The Digital Hub Development Agency, which operates The Digital Hub, the LDA will transform underutilised parts of The Digital Hub campus into a new, sustainable urban community with a distinctive identity, integrated into the wider Liberties. The total area involved in the Pear Tree Crossing project is 3.72 hectares and the development will include c.550 new homes, spaces for enterprise and commerce, combined with amenity, leisure, civic, cultural, community and open areas. The local built and layered heritage will remain at the heart of this project, with existing businesses and residents’ engagement shaping the provenance of the site and area.
Legacy
Conscious of the site’s important history, considerable efforts will be made to repurpose the existing architectural heritage and buildings where possible, including Vat House 7, while protecting the area’s unique character. The plans include new green spaces for people to enhance biodiversity, as well as the delivery of more energy efficient and healthy homes and public spaces that are accessible and safe.
Identity – Aesthetics & Functionality
Initiated through conversations with The Digital Hub, local residents, community groups & businesses about the future of the site, Pear Tree Crossing strikes a balance between aesthetics and functionality, supporting sensitive regeneration and enriching the existing heritage and unique identity of the Liberties. It is envisioned that the proposed development will support existing initiatives, and create flexible new cultural, community and commercial spaces.
By acknowledging and showcasing the unique social, cultural and built fabric of the area and enhancing this through considered interventions and rejuvenation initiatives, Pear Tree Crossing positions itself as an exemplar place which will stand the test of time. A future heritage asset, home to and loved by many.
