Tour Information +
This talk explores the history of Shanganagh Castle, a castellated Georgian great house which was once home to one of Ireland’s most significant Grand Tour Collections. The Cockburn Antiquities Collection was formed by Sir George Cockburn who lived in Shanganagh Castle from the turn of the 19th century until his death in 1847.
Sasha Smith, Assistant Curator UCD Classical Museu, will be discussing the history of the Cockburn Collection of Antiquities, from its time in Shanganagh Castle through to its acquisition by UCD and the last nine decades during which it has been an integral part of the Museum’s Collection. She will also share the exciting plans to digitally recreate the original display arrangement of the Shanganagh Castle’s Piccolo Vaticano antiquities.
The talk will be followed by tea and coffee, offering an opportunity to discuss Shanganagh Castle’s past, present, and future, share memories of the castle, and contribute ideas for its next chapter.
Meeting Point: Crinken Church Pastoral Centre, Cork Little, Shankill, Co. Dublin, A98 VX58
