You are invited to take part in a drawing workshop at the National Gallery of Ireland. This artist-directed 90 minute indoor flow exercises will aim to create several drawings of lines, shade, shadow and colour elements that make up architectural space. Participants need not have prior experience with architectural sketching. The artists will lead participants through a rigorous porcess to define and articulate the spaces, and create a unique series of drawings. Through the workshop, participants will come to know the design of our built environment in a new way. The National Gallery offers rich and complex interior architecture for the purposes of the workshop. The workshop is opening our way of seeing and experiencing architectural space. It is a noticing, it is about seeing it is about representation.

The workshop facilitators are Gerard O’Brien and Richard Reep. Both are visual artists with backgrounds as designers – Gerard being a landscape architect and Richard an architect. Both artists desire to share their delight in drawing and thus coming to know the space in which we dwell and experience. The purpose of this workshop is twofold. Of course it is about space; and also it is about drawing itself. By breaking down drawing using a series of scores or instructions, participants will an opportunity to grapples with individual elements separately, and then all together, holistically.We admit that the rigid nature of some of the instructions may challenge some participants, but hopefully a rich experience will be had by all!

The National Gallery is well set up for accessibility. There are four disabled parking spaces located outside the Merrion Square entrance to the Gallery. The meeting point for the workshop is the Clare Street entrance which is on the flat. We may go to a higher level for the workshop but there is a lift. The internal surface is a flat smooth surface. We intend to concentrate the workshop in the entrance atrium which is bright space. The space can be busy and loud.
