Join us for a behind-the-scenes tour of Throwing Shapes, Ireland’s first open-access ceramics studio, located in the heart of Newmarket on Mill Street.

Over the past decade, the Newmarket neighbourhood has undergone significant transformation. Throwing Shapes, which occupies the ground-floor commercial unit of a studio accommodation building, demonstrates that empty spaces can be used as hubs for creativity, learning and community while retaining the area’s craft heritage.

During this tour, you’ll explore the studio, learn about the ceramic-making process, and discover how a contemporary craft space has helped bring making, education and social connection back to the area. We’ll discuss the design of the space, the role of creative industries in urban regeneration, and how accessible cultural spaces can contribute to thriving local communities.

The tour will take place throughout the studio, beginning on the ground floor before moving to the first floor via a staircase of approximately 30 steps. Unfortunately, there is no lift access, so the first floor is not accessible to visitors with mobility impairments. The ground floor of the studio is fully accessible.

As this is a working ceramics studio, floors may be slippy in areas and visitors are asked to wear suitable footwear. Seating will be available during the talk and tour. The studio can be lively, with background conversation, pottery wheels in use, and general workshop noise. Visitors should also be aware that there may be clay dust present, although the studio follows strict dust management and health and safety procedures.
