TWC is housed in what is known as the old Smurfit Kappa building. It was originally constructed in 1923 as the administrative block of the former John Player & Sons tobacco factory. The premises were originally part of the Imperial Tobacco Co. It was used as a printworks from the 1980’s to 2000’s. Evidence of its history can be seen around the building. The outside is a protected façade.
It was designed by an English architectural practice – Hepworth & Rayson, and construction was completed by G&T Crampton. The building was later extended by Ashworth & Smith. The symmetrical layout in a neo-Classical style is highly representative of the industrial design of the early 20th Century. It is composed of granite, Portland a stone and Westmoreland slate.
The tour – “Accessibility: A tour of The Wayfinding Centre” will be running from 11:00am in intervals of 1hr each until the last tour at 2:00pm. Alongside our Access Ambassadors, visitors will be able to learn about our mission to unlock mobility for all and the history for this magnificent building.
