Clerys Quarter, which is centred around the refurbishment and extension of the historic Clerys Building, originally constructed in 1922, creates a new retail, office, hotel and leisure destination at the heart of Dublin. This development of the building and its surrounding areas combines both traditional elements and modern concepts to enhance the evolving regeneration of this part of the inner city. This new city quarter improves pedestrian links and activates the existing fabric, creating additional amenities. These connections also reaffirm the bond between the protected structure and the public realm of the development and rejuvenate its purpose.
The sympathetic transformation of the listed Clerys Building includes the restoration of iconic features, including the colonnaded façade, internal staircases, columns and ceilings and the famous Clerys’ clock. Clerys’ original restaurant and bar, The Tea Rooms have also been fully refurbished. The roof top destination is seen as a key element of this important inner city development. It successfully blends additional publicly accessible space as an appropriate response to the ambition and vision for the redevelopment. The project provides 5,574 sq. m of retail (60,000 sq. ft), 8,556 sq. m. of commercial offices (92,100 sq. ft.) and houses the HSE Rotunda day center. The tour will commence at the new main entrance from the O’Connell Street. Traditionally, we will meet under the Clerys clock and walk into the building.
While passing through the spaces of the old department store design concepts for the new mixed use of the building along with multiple challenges encountered during the construction and restoration works will be explained.
