Tour Information +
The walk will trace a journey through Dublin’s city centre west of O’Connell Street examining changes that have taken place to the North City Centre’s buildings and urban form over the last half century with a focus on the development of the ILAC centre.
The modern movement’s emphasis on comprehensive redevelopment resulted in the demolition of Denmark Street and the construction of the ILAC centre by the Irish Life Assurance Company. It was an example of the car-dominated ‘superblock’ as a new urban form.
The tour will also focus on changes in recent years including new communities, housing on Dominic Street, and the reinstatement of a tram line. It will discuss proposals to redevelop the historic area around Moore Street, greening the public realm, possibilities for re-inventing the ILAC Centre, and the potential of the Dublin Metro
