External walking tour of conservation works designed by Architects Department Fingal Co Co completed over last 7 years following publication of the Swords Castle Conservation Plan in 2014.
Built around 1200 AD Swords Castle is located within the town centre is a former residence of the Medieval Archbishop of Dublin. The extensive complex of buildings is in the form of a rough pentagon of 0.5 hectares and is enclosed by a perimeter wall of 260 meters. Current buildings within the complex include a Chapel, Constable’s Tower and a small information and tourist office.
The recent conservation works have generally related to consolidation works on the masonry walls, improved public access and landscape improvements to enhance the setting and provide interpretation of the site. Funding for the works was provided by Fingal County Council assisted by a grant from the European Regional Development Fund.
