Smock Alley Theatre is a landmark heritage building on one of the oldest streets in Dublin. Originally built i 1662 to house the first Theatre Royal the building operated as a theatre until 1790 and hosted hundreds of people eery night to enjoy the new plays of the times by Goldsmith, Farquhar and RB Sheridan (whose father Thomas Sheridan was the theatre’s manager).
The building re-opened as a Catholic Church in 1810 and was one of the first to defy penal law and ring the bell within the City walls calling the faithful to mass. The Church of St Michael & St John finally closed it’s doors in 1989 and the building reopened as a theatre in 2012.
The tour will visit all three spaces within the original building including the Main Space Theatre, the Boys School and the magnificent Banquet Hall with plasterwork ceiling and stained glass windows.
