Peace Park had been closed for many years prior to this refurbishment and had suffered as a result of anti-social behaviour, which was facilitated through the previous design of the space. Peace Park was identified for refurbishment in the Liberties Greening Strategy. The landscape design for this inner city space has opened up the park, allowing for better visibility into the space, thus increasing passive supervision, while retaining the enclosed and intimate nature of the previous design. The design also incorporates a circular plinth memorial to the Irish who fought and died in World War 1, where soil from Flanders, Belgium was unified with soil from the four provinces of Ireland. The design team worked closely with the client and contractor to complete this new public open space under a tight programme.
