In the light filled space of their neoclassical Sculpture Hall, Hugh Lane Gallery hosts one of berte & harmey’s series of Bare Maps (BMd1) as part of Open House Dublin 2022. BMd1 focuses on the greater urban area around Phoenix Park and Dunsink Observatory, including a former landfill site and areas earmarked for further development.
Using LiDAR data supplied by OSI (Ordnance Survey Ireland), berte & harmey developed a map showing the terrain stripped bare, devoid of vegetation and buildings, but retaining traces and marks of (non-)human activities and infrastructure.
Conceived as a prompt to relook at and discuss the spaces we inhabit, the Bare Map series is designed to spark conversations and discussion. The map is accompanied by a glossary – Glossa – a small-scale system displaying words gleaned from official reports (concerning the area of BMd1) juxtaposed with language generated through wordplay, discussion, memory and public contribution.
The Bare Map is presented on a custom modular support structure created in collaboration with Brussels based OS_Studio who foster an open modular design methodology and grid system. Nul Punt Wolk is an ongoing collaboration between Irish artist Cliona Harmey and Belgian artist-architect Filip Berte, who as artistic duo berte & harmey share interests in history, human geography and technology. Nul Punt Wolk‘s name is inspired by the point cloud data they use to generate the map and it is hoped that the Bare Maps and their clouds (‘wolk’ in Dutch) can also act as an open space of imagination, with the potential to prompt discussion around alternate futures.
The installation is open during gallery hours Thursday 9.45am– 6pm, Friday 9.45am – 5pm, Saturday 10am – 5pm
The artists will be present in the space and available to discuss the work on Thursday and from 12-3pm Fri & Sat.
Drop-in event. No booking required.
