Steeped in rich history, Lis na Carrig—originally named Mount Aventine—was one of the first houses built in the suburb of Foxrock (1862).
The house was designed by Edward Henry Carson, the renowned architect and father of Sir Edward Carson. The Victorian house still boasts its original 6-acre plot, now transformed into beautifully maintained gardens featuring numerous specimen trees and intricate flower beds.
In the early 1900’s the house was home to Sir Henry Robinson, a highly influential senior civil servant and vice-president of the Local Government Board for Ireland. After the Robinsons, it was owned by the Stoneys, the Byrnes and the McLaughlins
During the civil war, 1922, the house was raided by the IRA. In the aftermath of the raid, Michael Collins visited Lis na Carrig in an armored car on August 19, (1922) just three before tragic assassination in Cork.
Since 1996, Lis na Carrig has been lovingly owned by the McCabe family, who have raised their three sons within its historic walls. Since then, there has been significant restoration to the property including an extension to the property in 2006, all the while maintaining the character and features of the original house. Over the years, the family has amassed a collection of antiques and artwork, which is proudly displayed throughout the house.
Chantal McCabe, matriarch of the family was awarded philanthropist of the year in 2009. Her philanthropic work and passion for personal health and wellbeing led to the formation of Aventine wellness gardens in 2021, a non-profit located on two acres at the rear of the estate.
The gardens offer workshops in social and therapeutic horticulture, yoga, meditation & breathwork, lifestyle medicine as well as community events. Last year the house opened up as an exclusive hire venue for corporates, life celebrations, private rentals and wellbeing events.
Building tours will take place on Friday 18th, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th.
“A Woman’s Personal Space” will take place on Saturday 19th October at 12pm
