This guided tour for Open House will explore all aspects of the Gaol’s history. Opened in 1796 as the new county gaol for Dublin, the building reflected developing ideas in prison reform and architecture that emerged throughout the 19th Century. Kilmainham Gaol was a prison for common criminals, and a place of detention for convicts awaiting transportation to Australia. During its 128-year history, the Gaol also witnessed some of the most heroic and tragic events in Ireland’s emergence as a modern nation.

The tour will visit the the prison Chapel, the Georgian and Victorian Wings of the Gaol and the prison yards.

This tour is pre-book only, booking opens 14 September.
