When inaugurated in 1796 this was the largest floating dock in Europe and operated with mixed commercial success for over 150 years. Not forgetting its more recent history as fabled battleground from our decades of revolution – just commemorated with a bridge.

Today’s vista is of an urban wasteland transformed but endlessly unfinished. Home to Ireland’s only city residential marina. Architecturally bordered all round – from altitude with attitude to boomtime banality and masterful mediocrity? And all overlaying this engineering masterpiece – impressive even today for its complexities, for its scale and ambition.
