Tour Information +
We invite you to join us at the former Science Gallery for a conversation hosted by the Irish Architecture Foundation and the National Disability Authority as part of Open House Dublin Festival of Architecture.
Louise Bruton, writer and disability rights activist, will guide a discussion with Fíonnadh McGonigle of the National Disability Authority, Glenn Quinn, Irish Wheelchair Association member, Jack Kavanagh, Director of Move The Needle and Nicola Ryan, Director of Studio Red Architects.
The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities recognises the right of disabled people to adequate housing, and to be included in the community. Article 19 affirms that disabled people have the right to live independently and to make their own choices on where and with whom they live. This includes ensuring access to accessible housing supported by services such as personal assistance, and assistive technologies.
In practice, many disabled people find it difficult to find housing to meet their needs, and experience barriers to accessing housing such as long waiting lists, limited affordability and a lack of options. The systems in place to apply for a home and independent living supports can be complex and difficult.
How can this be improved? Homes should be designed and constructed using the principles of universal design. Services and supports should be readily available for people to live independently in the community.
