Tour exploring the design integration of the gatehouse building (by LiD Architecture) and the wider cemetery (by Cunnane Stratton Reynolds Landscape Architects). Evolving from the adjacent entry gate/lodge typologies, the building and boundary wall were conceived as one continuous edge element, folding inwards to create a threshold which orientates and separates arriving cars from the processional hearse route through the ceremonial portal. This is aligned with the primary axis of the valley, celebrating the movement of water down through the site, and opens into the Ceremonial Plaza where mourners can gather in the shelter of a colonnade. The enclosing columbarium walls frame views along routes extending into the cemetery with the Gatehouse as the organising fulcrum, guiding bereaved visitors through the spatial experience of the burial ritual.
