The location within the Digital Hub area has strong industrial heritage and was the site of Roe’s Distillery, a significant complex dating from 1757. Several historic structures remain on the site including – the Windmill with its distinctive dome, the former Printing Works, the Gate Lodge, the massive enclosing walls of the former Marshalsea prison and the Grainstore building. Binary Hub comprises 471 student bedrooms and shared amenities in two new buildings ranging in height from 5 to 10 storeys. The buildings form the edges of a new pedestrian street, Roe’s Lane, and wrap around onto Bonham Street to partially enclose two landscaped courtyard open spaces. Clean lines, legible forms and varying heights create an overall building profile that is reminiscent of the varied nature of the surrounding context.
