The house forms part of a terrace built in Dundrum in the 1870’s. Then farm land, the terrace of cottages was built to house the lands farm workers. The current owner, designer Sarah Lafferty purchased the house in 2003, and after a devastating house fire in 2005, in which the house was badly damaged, but no one was injured, she extensively renovated the property. The original Georgian facade was restored to its former glory, and everything beyond that was reshaped into an unexpected and uplifting contemporary space. Particular emphasis was paid to maximising the small footprint. Clever design gives this small house a wonderful feeling of openness and light. After the experience of losing most of her possessions, and the realisation of how much of the stuff in our homes is unnecessary, the owner is now a passionate advocate of the benefits of minimalist living.
