The corporation responsible for improving Dublin Port also known as the Ballast Board, assumed the responsibility of lighting the coast in 1810. In the Commissioners of Public Works report 1845, it is recorded that the new lighthouse would be complete in the coming season. This permanent lighthouse and dwelling was designed by Chief Engineer with the Ballast Board, George Halpin, with some alternations by Jacob Owens. The cost of the Granite tower was £937.The light was established on the 1st October 1847, 41 feet above high water, and of 12,000 candle power. The smaller West pier lighthouse was completed in 1852. In 1877 the tower on the east pier was heightened 12 feet and a 'dioptric' lighting system was installed. In 1944 a diaphone fog signal was installed. The station switched from vaporised paraffin to electricity, allowing it to unmanned in 1968. (Credit : OPW, Caroline Pegum, Nov 1996)
